The Tradition of Quinceanera

February 26, 2009

Birthdays are a special time for any girl.  There are certain birthdays in different cultures that represent sort of a a “right of passage” for them.  For Americans the 16th birthday or Sweet Sixteen is often significant, with many girls throwing big parties to celebrate.  For girls in the Latin community the 15th birthday is significant, and  is knowns as the quinceanera, which is the celebration that takes place for the girl on her 15th birthday.

The celebration itself hightlights all of the important people in the girl’s life including, God, family, friends, etc.  At this time a girl is said to transcend from being a “girl” to a “young woman” or from a “nina” to a “senorita” as they say in their culture.

This time is also celebrated with a traditional dance.  The festivities are important to the girls in the Latin community.  The party is full of celebration and fun as in any party.  Gifts may be given as well as quincaenera favors given to those in attendance.

Celebrating is important to all cultures, no matter how it is done.
